Port Macquarie-Hastings stretches from the mouth of the Hastings River at Port Macquarie, inland to the old timber town of Wauchope and south along the coast to Lake Cathie and the Camden Haven. Auto electrical work here covers salt-air corrosion, boat and caravan towing, flood recovery, farm vehicles and the everyday cars of a growing coastal population.

Suburbs in Port Macquarie-Hastings

The council area is run by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and centres on Port Macquarie, a fast-growing coastal city popular with retirees, downsizers and young families. Light industry sits in the streets around Lake Road and Jindalee Road. Wauchope, 19 km inland on the Oxley Highway, is a farming and former timber town on the Hastings River. Ocean Drive runs south past Lake Cathie toward the Camden Haven, where Laurieton sits under North Brother mountain. Beach suburbs fight salt, river towns plan for floods, and inland roads mean longer drives and more wildlife.

Common auto electrical jobs in Port Macquarie-Hastings

Some jobs turn up right across the Hastings, from the breakwall to the back roads behind Wauchope.

Salt air on the coast

Most of the population lives within a few kilometres of the ocean or a tidal river, and the moist, salty air works its way into battery terminals, earth straps and plug connections. The damage builds slowly, so the first sign is often a slow crank or a light that works one day and not the next. A white or green crust on the terminals is worth cleaning off before it spreads. Our guide how to clean corroded battery terminals shows the safe way to do it.

Boats, vans and the Pacific Highway

The Hastings River, Cathie Creek and the Camden Haven River all have public boat ramps, and the Pacific Highway brings a steady flow of caravans through the region. That means plenty of trailer plugs, brake controllers and van batteries. A boat trailer that's backed into salt water every weekend needs its lights and plug checked often, while a caravan heading up the Oxley Highway needs brakes and charging set up properly. See why aren't my trailer lights working for the usual faults.

Checks after flood water

In March 2021 the Hastings and Camden Haven rivers flooded badly. Low-lying parts of Wauchope, Port Macquarie and Laurieton were evacuated, and roads to the airport were cut. Cars that sat in water, or were driven through it, can develop electrical faults weeks later as connectors and modules corrode. If water has reached the floor or the engine bay, don't try to start the car. Have it inspected, and read what to do when a dashboard warning light comes on if warnings appear later.

Lights for country roads

West of Wauchope, the Oxley Highway climbs toward Walcha through long stretches of unfenced country, where cattle, kangaroos and wombats can be on the road. Locals who drive it at night, or who work on farms off Bago Road and the river flats, often want better headlights or driving lights. Any aftermarket lights need to meet NSW vehicle standards and be wired with a relay and fuse. Our guide how to wire a 12V relay explains the basics.
